Free Nationwide CTE Staff Development Day Planned for August

iCEV, a Texas-based company that provides online curriculum for certificate programs in many vocations, will share information on new courses of study, testing and credentialing tools, best practices and other insights.

Career and technical education curriculum provider iCEV is offering to educate the educators as part of a free online national professional development event ahead of the 2024-2025 academic year, officials announced this week.

The company’s Back-to-School virtual seminar for all career technical education (CTE) teachers and administrators is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7. This year’s program offers nine sessions throughout the day. The selected topics are based on trends and advances in the field, according to a news release today.

“With the increasing emphasis on — and need for — CTE in today’s schools, it’s important for teachers and administrators to be in-the-know when it comes to the latest CTE trends and resources available to them,” iCEV CEO Dusty Moore said in a public statement. “From our exciting keynote presentation to timely sessions on teacher retention and CTE funding, our Back-to-School seminar provides a valuable professional learning opportunity for CTE educators as they work to strengthen their CTE programs for next school year and beyond.”

The program begins at 10 a.m. central time with an hourlong keynote session, “Teaching with Impact and Courage: Five Strategies for Effective Educators.” The speaker is Ming Shelby of TED-Ed, an education initiative that produces animated instructional videos for students and teachers around the world.

iCEV, based in Lubbock, Texas, set up shop in 1984 and has since evolved into an online curriculum provider in several subject areas, including trade and industrial education, agricultural science, business and marketing, law enforcement, family and consumer science, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, health science, and career exploration. The company also provides testing platforms for obtaining credentials, and data management services for reporting industry certifications and work-based learning requirements, according to the news release.

The company’s event will feature 45-minute information sessions after the keynote presentation. According to the iCEV website, they include:

  • What’s New at iCEV: Get an overview of curriculum updates across six subjects, a new turfgrass science certification program, and new certification preparation materials for Adobe and AutoCAD certification programs.
  • Command Your CTE Data with Eduthings: Learn how the tool tracks student achievement, measures program effectiveness, simplifies data collection, reporting and analysis, and helps school districts comply with transparency laws and regulations.
  • Best Foot Forward - Kicking off the First Week of School with iCEV: Instruction will be provided on setting expectations for student behavior and participation and building stronger student-teacher relationships through interaction and activities.
  • Recruit and Retain - Strategies for Finding and Keeping Quality Educators: This session covers recruitment, interviewing, candidate selection, onboarding, ongoing professional development, and retention strategies for improving a district’s workforce.
  • Future-Ready Teaching - Nurturing 21st Century Skills in the Classroom: Attendees will learn the key components of 21st century skills, including creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication and digital literacy, and receive guidance on how to help students grown in those areas.
  • Funding First - Unlocking Resources for Career and Technical Education Programs: This session covers how to maximize existing resources, best practices for securing future grants, how to garner community support for fundraising, and practical approaches for measuring returns on investments.
  • Crafting Effective Assessments - Unlocking iCEV’s Custom Exam Tool: A look at the company’s platform for student assessments and guidance for accurately measuring student comprehension and learning outcomes.
  • Discover New Certification Updates: This session will provide information on BASF Plant Science, from the multinational chemical company BASF; Southwest Airlines Professional Communications; and AMSA Food Safety & Science, for educators who are interesting in adding them to their CTE programs.

All attendees will receive completion certificates for participating in the sessions. These sessions will remain available online to educators throughout the academic year, according to the news release, and all attendees will receive certificates of completion that they might be able to count toward their annual professional development requirements.
