(TNS) — The Maryland Energy Administration will award $4.9 million in grants for electric school buses, charging infrastructure and associated costs, the agency announced this week.

"The air our kids breathe should be as clean as possible. That's why our Electric School Bus Grants Program helps school districts invest in cleaner, electric buses," said Maryland Energy Administration Director Paul G. Pinsky, in a news release. "Electric buses deliver lower long-term operations and maintenance costs for school districts — and cleaner rides for our kids every day."

The maximum award for one grantee is $1 million, but it can be increased to $1.5 million depending on the school district's income qualifications and size. The program will have a "strong focus on expanding access to funding for overburdened and low to moderate income communities facing economic challenges," according to the agency's website.

Grants will cover 120 percent of a vehicle's incremental cost. Applications will be open through mid-December.

The Maryland Energy Administration is also providing $36 million in grants for cleaner energy systems in school buildings through its Decarbonizing Public Schools Program. Those applications are due Nov. 21
