The Missouri State Library system in Boone or Callaway counties is administering the Excel Adult High School program, an accredited online high school through which adults 18 and up can earn a diploma.

(TNS) — A new online program offered by Daniel Boone Regional Library offers an option for adults seeking their high school diploma.

The library system is joining libraries across Missouri to offer the Excel Adult High School program, an initiative of the Missouri State Library. The program is an accredited online high school that allows adults 18 and older to earn a diploma that is accepted at colleges and universities.

It's something that may be a good option for those who want a high school diploma to advance, said DBRL director Margaret Conroy in a news release.

"Giving adult students another option to earn their high school diplomas fits into our lifelong learning mission at the library," Conroy said. "We readily agreed to participate in this new online high school completion program made available through a grant from the Missouri State Library."

The project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provision of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Missouri State Library. The state library is part of the Missouri Secretary of State Office.

Applicants must be at least 18, live in Boone or Callaway counties, have completed eighth grade, have a library card or be willing to get one, and be able to dedicate eight to 10 hours per week to coursework.

The online adult high school is not affiliated with the MERS Goodwill Excel Center, which has a location in Columbia.

"Both are good options," said Mitzi St. John, library spokeswoman, by phone.

The library program is all online, and the Goodwill Excel Center has in-person options, so the efforts are serving different populations, St. John said.

Some scholarships are available, said Lauren Williams, adult services manager at the library.

"Thanks to funding we received from the Daniel Boone Regional Library Foundation and the Friends of the Callaway County Public Library, we are able to give eight students full scholarships to attend EAHS," Williams said. "The program is online and self-paced so adults can work it into their busy schedules. Excel Adult High School accepts transfer credits, which shortens the typical 24-month completion time."

The foundation will try to find other donors to make the program free for all who are accepted, St. John said.

Each applicant will complete an online self-assessment and a short prerequisite course. That will be followed by an in-person interview. When accepted, the students can begin their coursework immediately.
