Now Hiring: New York State Seeks a New Chief AI Officer

The brand-new job went to data and AI expert Shreya Amin earlier this year, but she has departed. The job opening, which has received "promising" applicants, is designed to help the state spark more innovation.

New York state is looking for its second chief AI officer.

In March, the state’s Office of Information Technology Services, or ITS, announced the hiring of Shreya Amin for the new position, a reflection of New York’s desire to keep ahead in the growing race involving AI innovation among public agencies.

She recently left that job, though, for reasons that remained unclear as of Wednesday. She could not be immediately reached.

A source with knowledge of the issue told Government Technology the departure had nothing to do with state policies or politics.

Amin brought 17 years of data and AI experience to the job.

The state has posted an ad for her replacement, a job with a pay range of $172,800 to $214,000 a year.

According to that advertisement, the new chief AI officer will report to the state’s executive deputy chief information officer and “be responsible for setting the overall AI strategy for the agency, including the design, development and implementation of artificial intelligence technologies.”

Despite her short time as chief AI officer, Amin did meaningful work, according to Scott Reif, chief communications officer for ITS.

“Shreya played an important role in setting up the chief AI office for future success,” he told Government Technology. “We have an extraordinary team and their work continues.”

Reif said the agency already has “promising candidates” for the job.
