One of the newest offerings from Motorola Solutions is designed to tell you.
The supplier of government technology has launched what it calls “AI nutrition labels” and they look just like one might expect: An imitation of labels found on the back or sides of food and beverage products, with proteins, fats and other ingredients replaced by such metrics as the training sources and ownership of data, the type of AI used and the types of media the particular AI can process.
Access to the labels is digital and comes via corresponding product pages, Jehan Wickramasuriya, SVP of AI and intelligence platforms, told Government Technology through an email interview.
“These labels also provide a mapping between the outcomes the products enable for our customers and Motorola Solutions’ internal AI research, development and testing processes,” he said. “They will not be printed directly on products or packaging.”
Among the goals of these new labels?
To bring “added clarity” to AI’s increasing important roles, according to a Motorola statement.
The launch of the labels comes amid a larger effort to educate the public — and public sector — about the power, ethical issues and origins of artificial intelligence tools.
The California Council on Science and Technology, for instance, recently launched an AI support program for elected officials and state legislative staff. In Delaware, state technology professionals have created a new enterprise policy to guide AI use.
But these new labels from Motorola Solutions — a giant in the public safety business — stand as one of the most high-profile AI education efforts yet from a government technology supplier.
The labels also serve as a response to changing customer demands, according to Wickramasuriya.
“Increasingly, public safety agencies and enterprises want to know more about — and foster transparent dialogue with their constituents — on how, where and why AI is deployed in safety and security contexts,” he said. “AI labels provide clear, concise information — including who owns data AI can process and the human controls in place — that bring a fresh, welcomed layer of transparency to AI innovation.”
The information offered on the Motorola labels comes from the “AI functionalities” of the company’s products. Updates will happen as products are released or improved.
“We’re paving the way for increased transparency and common understanding around where AI is increasingly being applied,” he said.
