UB Chooses Media Forensics Expert to Lead AI Institute

Siwei Lyu, a computer science professor and expert on AI-generated media like deepfakes, will lead the University at Buffalo's Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

(TNS) — The University at Buffalo has named Siwei Lyu, an expert on the forensics of deepfakes and other AI-generated media, as director of its Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

The institute, which was established in 2021, brings together faculty, labs and centers of excellence from across UB and industry partners to solve complex challenges.

Lyu is a SUNY distinguished professor and SUNY Empire Innovation professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

“UB continues to deepen its commitment to responsibly harnessing AI and data science to address critical societal challenges,” said Venu Govindaraju, UB senior vice president for research, innovation and economic development. “We are excited that Siwei Lyu, who is among the world’s foremost authorities in digital media forensics and an expert in machine learning and computer vision, will assume leadership of IAD."
