Preparing K-12 and higher education IT leaders for the exponential era

Code.org Initiative to Expand Digital Literacy Beyond Coding

Modeled after its Hour of Code campaign, Code.org's new Hour of AI initiative means to prepare students and families for the future of artificial intelligence through practice with coding and AI tools.

Over a decade after introducing students to the fundamentals of computer science through its Hour of Code campaign, education nonprofit Code.org is broadening its reach with a new program that bridges the gap between coding and the next frontier of digital literacy.

Developed with input from the nonprofit CSforALL, the Hour of AI initiative aims to equip students, educators and families with foundational artificial intelligence literacy in preparation for navigating and shaping an increasingly AI-driven world, according to a recent news release.

"Just as the Hour of Code showed students they could be creators of technology, the Hour of AI will help them imagine their place in an AI-powered world," Code.org CEO and co-founder Hadi Partovi said in a public statement. "Every student deserves to feel confident in their understanding of the technology shaping their future. And every parent deserves the confidence that their child is prepared for it."

The initiative will coincide with Computer Science Education Week in December 2025 and is supported by leading tech companies like Microsoft and Anthropic, as well as educational organizations such as Common Sense Media and the American Federation of Teachers, highlighting the growing view that AI literacy is an essential component of modern-day education.

Hour of AI activities will focus on creativity and exploration, including hands-on projects that invite students to explore AI through art, music and movement, according to the news release.

“During the Hour of AI, learners will be prompted to express their creativity with the help of AI through a mashup of music and synchronized dance. Using a blend of coding and AI tools, participants will design dancers, remix music, and choreograph original routines, bringing it all together in a one-of-a-kind creation to share with the world,” the news release said.

Following Code.org's other advocacy efforts, such as the publication of an open letter signed by major CEOs earlier this year promoting computer science education, the Hour of AI reflects a growing emphasis on AI literacy as a fundamental component of K-12 education. It also represents an early effort to provide equitable access to foundational knowledge in the rapidly evolving field.
