A new partnership between a major textbook publisher and a science-focused ed-tech company aims to digitize K-8 science lab courses in Texas.

According to a news release, the San Jose-based PocketLab’s Online Notebook, a cloud-based software tool with which students can log, visualize and analyze data, will become part of the teaching and learning platform from HMH, which makes textbooks and digital curriculum materials for a variety of grades and subjects. The new tool, HMH Into Science Texas, will allow students to collaborate on scientific investigations and customizable educational activities developed in line with state standards, including the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS).

Given the footprint of HMH, which counts more than 50 million students in 150 countries as users, the partnership could also mean an expanded reach for PocketLab, which has clients in more than 80 countries worldwide.

“We are delighted to partner with PocketLab to activate engaging, digital explorations of science phenomena in K-8 classrooms using HMH Into Science Texas,” Jim O'Neill, general manager of core solutions at HMH, said in a public statement. “For both HMH and PocketLab, this ed-tech collaboration is about student-centered learning. It’s about inspiring but also really empowering students to think and act like scientists.”

Further details about the partnership’s combined offering are unavailable, but the news release added that HMH and PocketLab will unveil more about the partnership at PocketLabs’ 11th Science is Cool (ScIC11) event in Dallas on April 5, which will entail a day of free professional development with expert speakers to share tips for encouraging students to think critically and be inquisitive about science-related topics.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with HMH to bring PocketLab Notebook, our innovative science education software platform, to Texas,” PocketLab CEO Dave Bakker said in a public statement. “By combining HMH’s world class platform and Notebook, Texas science educators will have state-of-the-art tools and dynamic content that will make a real difference in the lives of young learners.”
