The message explained that on Monday the district’s security tools identified attempts to install malware on some of its systems, a problem that the district needed to investigate before bringing them back in service.
Therefore school was canceled on Tuesday, though after school activities were still scheduled.
On Tuesday evening the district announced that schools would also be closed on Wednesday.
“We are now working with cybersecurity specialists to help us understand what happened before bringing our systems back online,” the message said.
Superintendent Michael Maley said that he was tied up in meetings on the situation on Tuesday, and he and other school officials were not available for comment.
“As you can imagine, we do not have a lot of information available as of this communication,” the message to parents said. “The investigation into this matter is in its earliest stages. Cyber investigations are methodical and take time, and there is no shortcut for completing a fulsome review. We are asking for your patience and understanding while we work through this.”
The closure only affects students who attend the junior-senior high school, elementary center and Llewellyn Early Childhood Center, the message to parents said.
All other students were to report to their schools.
Transportation for the Schuylkill Technology Center, the Intermediate Unit and alternative schools was still to be provided at the normally scheduled times, the message said.
There was no word yet on whether data from the district, students or families had been compromised.
