Mercer County, N.J., home to Trenton, the state’s capital, has named veteran IT executive Lee E. Micai as its inaugural chief technology officer, officials have confirmed.

Micai’s first day as CTO was Jan. 20, Theo Siggelakis, the county’s director of communications and intergovernmental affairs, said.

Micai said Friday he began his service with the county as a systems analyst in 1999, when he was named “Rookie of the Year.”

From there, Micai served as the department head for Management Information Systems (MIS) at the Mercer County Board of Social Services, an independent agency. Most recently, he served as a senior systems analyst for the Mercer County Board of Social Services, according to the organization’s website.

“Returning as CTO feels like coming home,” said Micai in an email, noting he will be “taking on the responsibilities that were formerly held by the head of IT.”

In his new role, Micai said the focus will be “building relationships and setting up systems.”

“Sitting down, one-on-one, with IT staff and with department directors shows me how things get done and where IT can make a difference,” the new CTO said. “We’re creating consistent processes for IT support and communication across departments. That means setting up ticketing systems, improving how we collaborate with vendors, and documenting what matters.”

Micai's office will also be exploring how technology can make the county’s services more accessible for the public. Mercer County has roughly 392,000 residents.
