“I am looking forward to this next chapter where my focus will be on strengthening our cybersecurity posture and protecting the critical infrastructure that serves millions of Michigan residents," Menold wrote in a LinkedIn post announcing the move.
Menold has worked for the state for nearly 28 years, almost entirely in technology, starting as an IT tech in 1998. He went on to serve as IT manager, state administrative manager and deputy chief security officer, among other positions, before being elevated to chief technology officer in January 2024.
Menold said he expects his experience across the state to be an asset for his new work in cybersecurity.
"The experience I gained as CTO has provided me with valuable insights into our technology ecosystem," he wrote, "and I am eager to apply that knowledge to advance our security initiatives and build resilience across state operations."
With Menold now heading cybersecurity, the state is searching for a new CTO to lead enterprise technology. The position's responsibilities include serving as an IT deputy director, leading strategy and collaborating across state agencies. The application process is open now, and it is slated to close on Jan. 22.
In the meantime, the state has appointed Manuel Rosales as its acting CTO, Rosales announced via LinkedIn.
Menold changed jobs in December, capping a year in which Michigan has seen quite a few changes across its technology leadership positions.
Jayson Cavendish was the state's previous chief security officer, holding that job until he moved to the director’s seat of the Office of Performance Management in August, according to LinkedIn. In December, state CIO Laura Clark departed her position, leaving the state for a new role in higher education. Michigan has appointed Eric Swanson as acting CIO.
