The concept was included in the 2025-26 state budget. It was proposed by Gov. Kathy Hochul, who sought to boost the workforce in key industries.
Under SUNY Reconnect, students who enroll in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, engineering, green and renewable energy, nursing, teaching or technology programs will be eligible for free tuition, fees, books and supplies. The state will cover the remaining costs after financial aid, according to SUNY.
Four million New Yorkers will be eligible for free community college.
"The SUNY Reconnect program, launching for the fall 2025 term, will help break barriers to a college degree and provide financial support and flexibility for adult students to enroll, and more importantly, to succeed through to graduation at one of our excellent community colleges," SUNY Chancellor John King said.
Community college leaders welcome the implementation of the SUNY Reconnect program.
Cayuga Community College President Dr. Brian Durant called it "an inspiring plan." He said it will create avenues for students to "access degrees and training for sought-after careers."
Dr. Warren Hilton, president of Onondaga Community College, said the new initiative "promises a bright and prosperous future for central New York."
