(TNS) — The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District will close its schools for most of this week after ransomware disrupted several of the district's key online systems.

The district detected ransomware in its phones, air-conditioning controls, security camera monitoring and the Skyward platform used for its payroll, Uvalde CISD said in a Saturday afternoon statement. The school district is closing its schools from Monday through Thursday of this week, saying the affected systems are "crucial for the safety and security of our schools."

In a Facebook post Saturday, the district called the ransomware matter "a significant technology incident."

Ransomware is malicious software that locks users out of files or systems and demands payment to restore access, according to the FBI.

The district said it reported the incident to the FBI and other agencies, who will conduct an investigation to "uncover the source of the malware and assess whether any sensitive information has been compromised."

The four missed days will be made up later with unscheduled school days, Uvalde CISD said.
